In 1997, Cox New Orleans created a comprehensive initiative titled "Cox Plugged In" that would strive to inform and communicate with educators, parents and students about the importance of education and impact it has on our communities. On main component of the initiative was a 60 minute television program consisting of area high school students discussing topics relevant to young people.
Hosted by Cox's Public Affairs Director. the show consists of 25-30 energetic and bright high-school students, CPI-TV attempts to promote the good things happening in education, as well as, provide a vehicle for young people to express themselves in a miriad of topics.
For 13 seasons, The CPI TV has positively impacted the lives of over 500 area high school students who auditioned and were accepted to be a participant on the program. Many have used their participation on CPI as a part of their portfolio in getting into the college of their choice. The CPI experience looks great on a college application as it demonstrates the student has great communications skills, is aware and has an opinion on various issues and is engaged in the community. Additionally, many CPI alumni have went on to successful careers - even some in the communications field.
Annually at the end of the school year, CPI has open audtions for students entering the upcoming school year in 9th through 12th grade. The program is open to public, private and parochial school students.
selection committee reviews the application forms, student profiles, audition tapes and one-on-one interviews to make their final decision. Students are selected not so much on their on-screen talents, but on their people skills and ability to work together as a member of a team. The selection process is not an easy one, but the new cast offers yet another exciting group of insightful, engaging young leaders in our community.
